The Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame and the St. James High Alumni Association recently unveiled four banners which will be displayed at the Alumni Association’s home, ‘The Doghouse’ in Eddystone. Each banner contains the names of thirty individuals who were associated with St. James High as athletes or coaches and who have been enshrined in the Delco Athletes Hall of Fame. The names are listed in the order in which the person was elected to the Hall, with the first name on the first banner being that of Francis “Bean” Brennan, the late former teacher who was the school’s first varsity football coach. “John Shallet, St. James Class of 1969, proposed the idea to me several months ago,” John Leary, St. James ’68, Delco Athletes Hall of Fame president, said. “I presented it to our Board and the motion passed unanimously. We are trying to give back to the community and our members. Our vision is to present a banner to each of our county schools with Hall of Fame inductees. It’s a project that will require support from the schools in order to honor their deserving graduates.” Some of the schools already have ordered banners. “As Hall of Fame president I would like to thank John Shallet, John Mooney, St. James Class of ’50, Tony Iacone, St. James Class of ’63, Rich Pagano and Harry Chaykun for offering their years of experience and knowledge of Delaware County sports to the Hall of Fame for this project,” Leary stated. “It is not a coincidence that these subject matter experts are all inductees of our prestigious organization.” Shallet began the project early this year of going through the names of Delco Athletes Hall of Fame inductees to determine which names should go on the St. James banners. “It was a large number,” he said. “I thought I had all of them, but then I talked to John Mooney, former teacher, coach and athletic director at St. James, and Tony Iacone, who wrote two books about St. James, and we came up with a lot more names. I can’t thank them enough for the help they gave to make this all possible.” Alumni Association president Mike Ritz, St. James ’71, talked things over with his board, the Hall of Fame Committee made a presentation at an Alumni Association meeting and the idea met with great approval. The banners have been made and plans are being made to have them hung in a prominent place at the Doghouse, which will give additional recognition to all whose names appear. The Delaware County Health Department’s (DCHD) West Nile Virus Control program will conduct an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) mosquito adulticide spray in sections of Yeadon Borough, 8-11:30 p.m. Monday, August 1. Residential and recreational areas within the treatment zone will be treated to control adult mosquitoes. The Delaware County Health Department will perform the treatment using truck-mounted spraying equipment. For resident safety and information, the business license ‘BU3865’ will be visible on department equipment. The product used will be Duet, applied at a rate of .75 ounces per acre, designed to provide quick and effective control of adult mosquitoes. West Nile virus is an infection that is spread by infected mosquitoes biting humans that can cause neurologic symptoms. Many people who are infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, however, one in five people infected will develop flu-like symptoms and fever. Unexplained headaches, weakness, and fatigue are symptoms of West Nile virus and those who experience these symptoms should reach out to their primary care provider. In the event of weather or other unexpected delays, a rain date is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 3. Individuals are encouraged to take personal protection measures to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes. To protect themselves and to help prevent the spread of West Nile virus, residents are also encouraged to remember the ‘Three D’s’: Drain buckets, flowerpots, pet water dishes, clogged rain gutters, and other sources of standing water outside your home; Dress by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors, weather permitting; and Defend by using insect repellent with Deet, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus on exposed skin when outdoors. To report mosquito problems or for more information on how to prevent West Nile virus, visit https://delcopa.gov/westnileor call 484-276-2100.

Two of Delco’s greatest athletes had outstanding seasons in 1953. Emlen Tunnell was an all-pro NFL player, and Mickey Vernon made the all-star team. Eventually, he would total seven for his career, while winning his second American League batting title. That didn’t stop the Bowman Card Company from issuing error cards for the two Delco greats. The card for Emlen, the first African American and first defensive back to be elected to the NFL hall of fame, misspelled his last name — a common mistake at the time. The card for Mickey, who still holds the record for career double plays as a first baseman, showed his teammate Floyd Baker. Neither player held on to any of the error cards, which is too bad for their respective estates. The market value of each error card far exceeds the value of the correct version of the card. For more information on these two outstanding athletes, as well as other Delaware County luminaries, visit Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum online at http://www.delcosportsmuseum.org, or contact museum curator Jim Vankoski at 610-909-4919 or vankoski21@comcast.net. Paypal donations accepted on the museum’s website helps to keep Delco’s only sports museum current and financially sound. The Museum is located inside the Radnor Township Municipal Building at 301 Iven Ave., Radnor Township.
